The Teufelsberg in Berlin is a historically very charged in many layers and shrouded in legends. From Hitlers plans for the Wehrtechnische Fakultät – a military school, the highest pile of rubble in the city after the war, the therefore constructed Cold War listening station atop the city by the NSA, the falling trough of luxury housing plans during the dotcom crash, the Maharishi Foundation and David Lynch up to the current stalemate in the discussion about a use of the mountain, while squatters transform the place into the largest graffiti gallery in Europe.
My university got their hands on the building plans for the NSA listening station and in an unusual conservation attempt we reconstructed the decaying structures in VR.
You need to unzip the folder and have a working HTC Vive and steamVR installed.
left Controller touch press = aim and teleport on release
right Controller touch press = destroy/activate Object
You start of in one of the shielded rooms of the listening station and have to peel your way out trough different construction layers. Leaving the room, you will find yourself in a bizarre theater, where you can activate snippets of the places turbulent history.
You need to unzip the folder and have a working HTC Vive and steamVR installed.
left Controller touch press = teleport (the allowed area is signaled by the green or red pointer)
to activate the elevator you have to move a controller into the the small floating pyramids
You start of behind the main building and enter the building trough the cave-like 3d scan of a staircase. Take the elevator to the top. During the ascent the scans get more and more detailed. Eventually you’ll reach the impressive top radome, which originally protected the orientation of a large parabolic listening antenna from russian eyes. In reality the main building is currently closed due to fire protection regulations. To get a taste of the unique acustic from the top we had a set of microphones and speakers installed, which transferred any real sound you made to the top of the tower and the real echo from within the radome back down to you, while you where in virtual radome. This – of course – was only a temporary installation.
